Daily self-care looks like the minimum we need to do to make it to the next day. This is very subjective and everyone’s must-dos will look different. Make your daily self-care list short and manageable. This will give you the small wins you need to get back on track.
My three daily self-care goals:
-
Brush my teeth at least once.
I have never had a cavity and one of my biggest fears is getting one. However when I am depressed I don’t want to do anything and don’t care if I get a cavity. I know that healthy me cares about my teeth a lot so I make brushing my teeth a priority even if I don’t feel like it. Its a simple task that I know how to do well. I do not even worry if I brush my teeth twice a day or before bed. I just make sure that some time during the day my teeth get brushed at least once.
-
Movement.
Moving your body can be hard. Typically I get hung up on moving my body the “correct” way (lifting weights, getting on a spin bike, ect.). It is not necessary to know how many calories you burned or for it to even look like a typical workout. It is just important to move your body for 30 minutes a day. Dance in you kitchen, take a walk with a friend, play fetch with your dog, take a free yoga class on YouTube. Finding a way to move your body will help get your blood flowing and heart pumping. And hey if you are not careful it might even give you some energy back.
-
Drinking water.
You might be thinking, well duh everyone drinks water everyday. For my drinking water goal I do it a little differently. I drink water (or tea) mindfully. That means that I sit down with no distractions and for 3-5 minutes I just drink water. I let my mind wander over things I could get done for the day. Or I reflect on what I did well yesterday. I think positive thoughts and focus on hydrating my mind.
